Surprises and Secrets
So it’s Sunday night and, like any other senior, I’m looking for some cheap TV thrills before it’s back to textbooks and homework. I flip through the TV schedule for the night and, to my surprise, what should I see scheduled for eight o’clock? If you’re any good with predictions, you’ve probably already guessed it: Gossip Girl. I know what you’re thinking: it was a re-run. Gossip Girl airs every Monday at eight, with some channels showing re-runs on Sunday. Well you’re wrong. It was a new episode airing one day early. So now I have the honour of reporting back to you on episode two of this sizzling new season. But beware dedicated fans: spoilers ahead.
NOTE: I don’t do episode recaps. If you’re looking for an episode recap, I’m sure that another blogger on this site or elsewhere will be able to provide one.
If there’s one thing that this episode was full of, it was secrets. Nate and Catherine try to keep their relationship a secret. Nate keeps his family’s financial troubles a secret. Blair tries to keep her real self, friends, and life a secret from Marcus. Marcus tries to keep his mother’s disdain for his girlfriends a secret. Chuck tries to keep his lust/love for Blair a secret (well, from Marcus anyways). Dan and Serena try to keep their reunion a secret. Tsk, tsk. When will these children learn? When you start keeping secrets you’re just setting yourself up to get burned. And nobody wants that, do they?
Considering the amount of secrecy in this show, I wasn’t surprised that some of them had to be revealed. Reason: these Upper East Siders don’t seem to know the meaning of discretion. I mean, can these people not wait until they are somewhere more private (read: not a library at a party or outside of an elevator) to make out, knowing that they live in a world full of gossip? Hello!
This episode also showed Chuck’s second attempt to win Blair back from Marcus. Even though it didn’t work out, you need to give him some credit. If Blair hadn’t caught Nate doing the horizontal tango with Catherine, she’d probably have been single within hours. I can’t help but root for Chuck. Yes he’s conniving and a womanizer, but there’s nothing sweeter than his love for Blair. I mean, he’s loved her for so long and, after screwing up big time, he’s willing to go through anything to get her back.
Now isn’t that sweet?
Speaking of couples, what about Vanessa and Nate? I thought that they were a cute couple in a Romeo and Juliet kind of way. This episode seemed to hint at a reunion. It would be cute to see them together, but I’m still crossing my fingers for a Dan-Vanessa hook-up.
As for Serena and Dan, all I can say is that their whole “lets-think-about-it-but-still-make-out-in-a-Greyhound-bathroom” scenario brought about more eye-rolls than the dialogue in the Revenge of the Sith (hmm maybe that’s an exaggeration). Obviously they’re nuts about each other and no amount of thinking will bring them to any other conclusion. Yes, you may have problems later on, but cross that bridge when you get to it!
Now, onto Nate’s little arrangement. Really, Nate. Whoring yourself out to support your family? Let’s hope that he limits his clientele to Catherine or Gossip Girl will turn into a whole different genre of TV show. My advice: find a nice girl and betray your dirt bag of a father who obviously didn’t care enough about his family to have made sure that they would always provided for.
It’s episode two and already this season is trumping the drama of last season. I can’t wait to see what happens next. What do you predict? Whatever your predictions, be prepared to have them proven wrong by something 100 times more scandalous.
Until next time,
Sia
P.S: Does anyone else know why it was on tonight? It was on the A-Channel or something, if that means anything…
